FIVE DAYS TO GO
Sabine Mooibroek (1967) is a film and video maker living and working in Amsterdam and Antwerp. She also teaches at the Amsterdam Gerrit Rietveld Academy and sings in the band ‘Die Reichen und Glücklichen’ (The Rich and Happy). In 1977 she won the Swiss Short Film Award with HOW THESE GUESTS TALK – WI DIE GESCHT REDED. In October 2000 she was working on a video installation in Maastricht and a video performance in Luik (Belgium)…

…At the MAMAC (Museum for Modern and Contemporary Art) in Luik three museum attendants will wear a video work on their hearts for three weeks, while going about their daily duties. Normally it is they who watch the visitors, now the visitors will watch them and the videos. All three attendants will wear the same video work, assuring a minimum of disruption of the museum’s serenity…

…When we arrive two attendants are wearing their video work while the third set is laid out on a table like a baby. Erwin Nyboer manages to solve the problem. I talk to the attendants to make sure they understand why they are wearing these monitors. They have obviously given some thought to their appearance and they now look like generalized images of themselves. They are highly motivated, and definitely proud. Too proud for the concept, for the work. It means they will not forget that they are wearing a video, but hopefully their pride will become less apparent over the weeks. I am able to observe a few visitors and some hardly dare to look at the performers. In this work the viewer is aware of his own presence…
